Arjuna winning Draupadi's hand

Dear parents,
Hare Krishna.

I was not there last week. I got the class information from Vraja Bakti mtj. The story in her own words:

I told then the story of Draupadi Swaymwar. We recited the names of all pandavas, their mother’s name Kunti. We also talked a bit about who Karna was and who was Duryodhana. I mentioned that Arjuna and Krishna were cousins. Also after Rukmini, Draupadi was the most beautiful and sought after woman. I talked to about Draupadi rejecting Karna and insulting him for his lower birth by saying that we was not raised to be kind even if he was a king now and therefore an unfit husband for her. I described the story of how Arjuna hit the rotating fish on the ceiling by looking at its reflection in a bowl of water. I veered into the story of how Arjuna was so focus and told them the story of how Arjuna could hit the wooden bird in the tree because he could only see the bird’s head and nothing else. Once Arjuna married Krishna I told them on about Arjuna taking Draupadi to Kunti and told Kunti to guess what he had got. Kunti unaware of the marriage told Arjuna to share whatever he had gotten with his brothers. At this both Arjuna and Draupadi were shocked and did not know what to do. Kunti was also shocked once she learned that Arjuna had gotten Draupadi and she had told him to share her. I described in short the past life of Draupadi where she had undergone penances and attained boon from lord Shiva for a perfect husband. But since a perfect husband cannot be in one man she now had 5 husbands.

Damodar Lila

Once upon a time, seeing that her maidservant was engaged in different household duties, mother Yasoda personally took charge of churning butter. And while she churned butter, she sang the childhood pastimes of Krsna and enjoyed thinking of her son.

Krishna felt hungry and mother Yashoda had to attend to her child. When Krishna was feeding, she was smiling, enjoying the beauty of her child's face. Suddenly, the milk which was on the oven began to boil over. Just to stop the milk from spilling, mother Yasoda at once put Krsna aside and went to the oven. Left in that state by His mother, Krsna became very angry, and His lips and eyes became red in rage. He pressed His teeth and lips, and taking up a piece of stone, He immediately broke the butter pot. He took butter out of it, and with false tears in His eyes, He began to eat the butter in a secluded place.

In the meantime, mother Yasoda returned to the churning place after setting the overflowing milk pan in order. She saw the broken pot in which the churning yogurt was kept. Since she could not find her boy, she concluded that the broken pot was His work. She began to smile as she thought, "The child is very clever. After breaking the pot He has left this place, fearing punishment." After she sought all over, she found a big wooden grinding mortar which was kept upside down, and she found her son sitting on it.

He was taking butter which was hanging from the ceiling on a swing, and He was feeding it to the monkeys. She saw Krsna looking this way and that way in fear of her because He was conscious of His naughty behavior. After seeing her son so engaged, she very silently approached Him from behind. Krsna, however, quikly saw her coming at Him with a stick in her hand, and immediately He got down from the grinding mortar and began to flee in fear.

Mother Yasoda chased Him to all corners, trying to capture the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is never approached even by the meditations of great yogis. In other words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, who is never caught by the yogis and speculators, was playing just like a little child for a great devotee like mother Yasoda.

Mother Yasoda, however, could not easily catch the fast-running child because of her thin waist and heavy body. Still she tried to follow Him as fast as possible. Her hair loosened, and the flower in her hair fell to the ground. Although she was tired, she somehow reached her naughty child and captured Him. When He was caught, Krsna was almost on the point of crying. He smeared His hands over His eyes, which were anointed with black eye cosmetics. The child saw His mother's face while she stood over Him, and His eyes became restless from fear. Mother Yasoda could understand that Krsna was unnecessarily afraid, and for His benefit she wanted to allay His fears.

In order to punish Him, she thought to bind His hands with some ropes. She did not know it, but it was actually impossible for her to bind the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Mother Yasoda was thinking that Krsna was her tiny child; she did not know that the child had no limitation. There is no inside or outside of Him, nor beginning or end. He is unlimited and all-pervading. Indeed, He is Himself the whole cosmic manifestation. Still, mother Yasoda was thinking of Krsna as her child. Although He is beyond the reach of all senses, she endeavored to bind Him up to a wooden grinding mortar. But when she tried to bind Him, she found that the rope she was using was too short--by two inches.
She gathered more ropes from the house and added to it, but at the end she found the same shortage. In this way, she connected all the ropes available at home, but when the final knot was added, she saw that it was still two inches too short. Mother Yasoda was smiling, but she was astonished. How was it happening?

In attempting to bind her son, she became tired. She was perspiring, and the garland on her head fell down. Then Lord Krsna appreciated the hard labor of His mother, and being compassionate upon her, He agreed to be bound up by the ropes. Krsna, playing as a human child in the house of mother Yasoda, was performing His own selected pastimes.

King Shantanu and Satyawati
===========================

One day while training a new horse,Shantanu saw an enemy king coming with a large force to invade Hastinapur.Dev Vrat challenged him and captured the enemy prince and presented him before his father. King Shantanu was indeed very happy with his promising son.

The king was having a stroll on the bank of Ganga when he saw an extremely charming maiden. He was fascinated by her beauty. Her name was Satyawati, daughter of local fisherman. When the king asked him for the hand of his daughter,he(Satyawati's father) put forward a condition that the son born to Satyawati should be the successor to the Kaurava throne.

Disappointed and unhappy, the king returned to his palace.Dev Vrat came to know of his father's plight and told Satyawati's dad that he would give up his right to the throne. Dev Vrat also promised that he would not marry all his life(Thus there will not be any of his heirs for the throne). Then Dev Vrat, seating Satyawati in his chariot, brought her to the palace.

When king Shantanu saw Satyawati coming to the palace he was all praises for his son as he had gone out of way to fulfill his desire. Before long,Satyawati disclosed all what happened between Dev Vrat and her father. Hearing of the horrible pledge taken by Dev Vrat in order to please his dear father, the king felt shocked.
Unconsciously the words-Ek Bhisma Pratigya(a most horrible pledge)-escaped his lips and he was plunged in profound grief.

From that day on ,Dev Vrat came to be known as Bhishma.

MAHABHARATA
=============

The epic named Mahabharata is the work of Saint Vyasa. On the advice of Sage Brahma,Saint Vyasa requested Lord Ganesha to write the epic.

Story of Shakuntala and Dushyant
========================
The story of Mahabharata begins with Shakuntala, daughter of Menaka and sage Vishwamitra. While on a hunting trip, King Dushyant of the Puru dynasty meets the hermit-girl Shakuntala. They fall in love with each other at first sight and, in the absence of her father, Shakuntala weds the king in a ceremony of 'Ghandharva'-a form of marriage by mutual consent with mother Nature as the witness. When the time comes for Dushyant to return to his palace, he promises to send an envoy to escort her to his castle. As a fond remembrance he gives her a signet ring. One day when hermit Durvasa stops at her hut for hospitality, Shakuntala, lost in her love thoughts, fails to hear his calls. The temperamental sage turns back and curses her: "He whose thoughts have engrossed you would not remember you anymore." On the plea of her companions, the enraged sage relents and adds a condition to his curse-statement: "He can only recall you upon producing some significant souvenir."

Shakuntala and king Dushyant had a son named Bharata after whom India gets her name.Having grown up among fierce animals of the forest,Shakuntala's son was unbelievably brave and courageous. He possessed enviable dignity, charm and captivating manners.

Days roll by and nobody from the palace comes to fetch her. Her father sends her to the royal court for their reunion. While travelling, Shakuntala's signet-ring accidentally drops into the river and gets lost.

When Shakuntala presents herself before the king, Dushyant, under the spell of the curse, fails to acknowledge her as his wife. Heart-broken, she pleads to the gods for help. The spell is broken when a fisherman finds the signet ring in the stomach of a fish - the same ring that Shakuntala had lost on her way to the court. The king suffers from an intense feeling of guilt and injustice. Shakuntala forgives Dushyant and they are reunited happily.

Bharata succeeded to the throne of his father. He assumed the title of "Chakravati Samrat(a universal emperor) and so our country came to be called Bharatvarsha after his name.Of all the rulers that the Kuru dynasty had produced so far Bharata was matchless from every angle. He wanted that his dynasty could have the ablest possible rulers only if every new king came to be elected or selected on the basis of his merits.

King Bharata's sons were not worthy of succeeding to his powerful throne. He appointed saint Bharadwaj's son as the next ruler of his empire. After king Bharata's death his successor's reduced his large empire to a kingdom of
medium size. This kingdom had its capital at Hastinapur.

King Shantanu and Queen Ganga
========================

King Shantanu was the ruler of Hastinapur and he was known for his valour and wisdom. One day he went out for hunting to a nearby forest.Reaching the bank of Ganga he got down his chariot to have a stroll. He saw a charming damsel walking on the water's surface.

Captivated by her charm and beauty Shantanu asked her hand in marriage. She agreed on two conditions.

First condition: King Shantanu would never ask her who she was and where she had come from.
Second condition: He should never check her from doing anything or ask the reason of anything that she did.

Shantanu agreed to these conditions.Ganga and Shantanu entered into a love-marriage (gandharva vivah) then and there. In due course Ganga gave birth to a lovely male child.Queen Ganga carried the baby to the river. Shantanu was astonished when he saw Ganga drown his baby in the river.Shantanu was bound by his pledge not to question or interfere with her actions.Ganga gave birth to 6 more sons and drowned all of them in the river. Shantanu's patience was totally lost now.He made up his mind to violate his pledge. When queen Ganga bore the eighth son and marched to the river as before, the king chased her.

The king asked her the reason for drowning all his children.Hearing what king Shantanu had said, the queen remarked,"You have violated your pledge. Now I will not stay with you at all".I am taking your your eighth son with me to bring him up so that he may become potent enough to bear the afflictions supposed to befall him. When he is amply grown up,I shall come back and hand him over to you".

King Shantanu felt very disappointed and returned to his palace.King Shantanu was always in grief and often used to go to the bank of Ganga and sit there watching waves with a heavy heart.Years passed. One day when the king reached the river bank, he saw a young boy and queen Ganga emerge from the river. She said "Here is your eighth son.I have brought him up in order that he should be able to cope with what will befall him in his life on this earth. Educated by saint Vasishtha in morality, religious education,state-craft,archery and many other arts,he
equals Parashurama. I have named him Dev Vrat.

After blessing the boy Ganga disappeared.Returning to the palace, the king celebrated the advent of the prince and declared him to be his regent.

Mahabaratha story

For the past couple of weeks we have been talking about the Pandavas and Kauravas. I just randomly chose some stories but not really in a sequence so that the kids can get familiarized with the characters for next year.

The story which was told on sunday class is follows:

The Kauravas big brother Dhuryodana will plan to kill pandavas by sending them to the palace at Varnavat. The palace will be made of hay. This is to set fire to the palace when the Pandavas are resting with Kunti. Uncle Vidura will come to know about this. He will help Pandavas by building a tunnel for them to escape when Kauravas set the fire to the palace.

Pandavas will attend the fair in Varnavat each day, after 7th day the palace will be set to fire. The Pandavas will escape and go to a village called Ekachakra. There they will share a house with other Brahmana family. All the pandavas and mother Kunti will be dressed up as Pandavas.

One time the family whom they are sharing the place will be very sad. Kunti will come to know that there is a demon who is demanding food from everybody. Kunti will assure the family not to worry and she will sent Bhima with cart load of food for the demon Bakasura.

Bhima will keep eating the food infront of Bakasura. Bakasura will be so mad and Bhima that he was eating his food. He will fight with Bhima and Bhima will kill him and carry him to the village. All the village people will be happy to see this.

The Pandavas will keep moving to other place through the forest where Hidumba will be there. Hidumba has as sister Hidumbi. He asks her sister to go and look for food. But Hidumbi sees Bhima and gets attracted to him and wanted to marry him.

Hidumba sees her with Bhima and gets angry and fights with Bhima.
Bhima wins over Hidumba and marries Hidumbi and eventually Gadothgacha was born.

Then everyone reaches Panchal and hears about the syamvara of Draupati. There is a contest and whoever wins the contest will get married to Draupadi.

Rest of the story in next class.

Drama 3 - Govardhan Lila

Govardhan Lila

Scene 1:

### Music when Nanda Mahraj is preparing for the sacrifice (initial scene setting) ###

Narration:
The Holy place Mathura is spiritually superior to Vaikuntha, the transcendental world, because the lord appeared there. Superior to Mathura Puri is the transcendental forest of Vrindavan because of Krishna’s rasa-lila pastimes. And superior to the forest of Vrindavan is Govardhan Hill, for it was raised by the divine hand of Lord Krishna and was the site of his various loving pastimes.”

Krishna: I see that all of you are preparing for some great sacrifice. Tell me Baba, what are all these arrangements for?

Nanda M: Kanha ! We are making arrangements to perform a traditional sacrifice.

Krishna: Oh! a big sacrifice. Why?

Nanda M: We wish to please King Indra.

Krishna: Why we have to please King Indra?

Nanda M: He will send us rain clouds to pour down rain.

Scene 2:

Narration:
After hearing this from his father, Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in the presence of his father, the sages and the cowherd men of Vrindavan, deliberately spoke the Karma Mimamsa philosophy in a way to make the heavenly King Indra very angry.

Krishna: Govardhan hill gives everything so we need to worship him.

### Music shock from all others###

Nanda M: Then, definitely King Indra will be very angry with us.

Krishna: Even if he becomes angry, what will he do?

Brajbasi1: What will he do? If Indra does not give rain then Vrindavan will become desert

Brajbasi2- Not even a grass will grow.

Krishna: If he is so heartless, what kind of God is he? God must be kind and always willing to forgive the mistakes of his devotees.

Scene 3:

###Music for King Indhra's court room ###

Narration:
Everyone was convinced with Krishna’s proposal and performed the sacrifice for Govardhan hill. In the court of Indhra…

Messenger: All Glories to Maharaja Indra

Indra: Yes, tell me what is the reason for your untimely arrival

Messenger: This year the people of Vrindavan stopped performing sacrifice unto you

Indra: (Very angry) what? Impossible!!! Who did this?

Messenger: Krishna, Son of Nanda Maharaj, he is the king of cowherd people.

Indra: Call Samvartaka … The clouds of devastation

Samvartaka: comes before indra and offers obeisances.

Indra: Samvartaka, you don’t be afraid of anything. Go to Vrindavan and flood the entire village with your rain, hailstorm and thundering. Destroy everything. Uhhh..

Scene 4:

###sound of winds, thunder n lightning###

Narration:
Samvartaka started to do what Indhra told him to do. Vrindavan was covered with dark clouds, signs of rain appeared everywhere. The whole place was getting darker even in the day time.

Brajbasi1: Oh there is rain in Karthik month?

Brajbasi2: Come lets run home

Brajbasi3: I am feeling so cold

Brajbasi4: Look over there! There is a cyclone coming… lets run run

Brajbasi5: Oh My hut is blown off. There is no shelter, other than Krishna

Brajbasi1: I think Indra is angry on us

Brajbasi2: He is angry because he offered everything to Govardhan hill

All: Let’s all go to Krishna together he will definitely help us.

Scene 5:

Brajbasi1: Oh Krishna you are powerful and you can do anything please help us

Brajbasi 2: Oh Gopal!! our cows are helpless, please help

Brajbasi3: King Indra is angry now, he will destroy Vrindavan now

Krishna: Don’t worry everyone I will not destroy Indra, I will destroy his pride.

###music for krishna lifting the govardhan mountain with his little finger and for people looking in amazement###

(Krishna lifts the Govardhan hill in his small finger)

All of them look at him in amazement

Krishna: Do not fear, this mountain will not fall from my hand. Come in come in, come under this big umbrella

Scene 6:

Narration:
Lord Krishna stood there holding up the mountain for 7 days and 7 nights. The cowherd men and women out of love and affection looked upon Krishna with wide open eyes.
By continuously drinking the nectar of the beauty and sweetness of the all attractive Sri Krishna, the residents did not feel any thirst, hunger or fatigue.
The rain stopped.

Krishna: My dear cowherd men you can all leave and take your cows, wives. Everything had ended. The flood and rains will not come anymore.

Brajbasi1: Krishna, you are simply wonderful
Brajbasi2: Oh Krishna I love you

###end music when all bow down to Krishna###
###After this Jaya Radha madhava song will start with GOPA DANCE###

Gopi 3: Why don’t you tell yashoda that he broke the pot also. He is so naughty.

Gopi 1: yes there are so many complaints about him all over Gokul, but as soon as he is caught he will shed tears and we will leave him.

Scene 3:

Krishna: I know I will climb up and reach the pots.

Scene 4:

###sound of pot breaking 'damaal'###

Narration: So the boys climbed on each other and Krishna reached the pot and eat the butter. Everything was going fine until one pot fell down on the floor “damaal”
(damaal sound)

Yashoda: What was that sound? May be the monkeys have got inside the kitchen again

Gopi1: Could it be the naughty Krishna?

Gopi2: Ha Ha, Go Yashoda and find out who is inside

Gopi3: It will be definitely Krishna

Yashoda: Come with me to the kitchen and I will prove that they are the monkeys

Scene 5:

###music for the boys running out of fear###

Yashoda: Now I have caught you red- handed and so I will punish you. Come here.

In the city of Matura there was joy and happiness. The city was in festive mood and decorated very well. Vasudeva the son of surasena married Devaki, the sister of Kamsa….

###wedding music continues…###

Kamsa – Oh Devaki and my dear friend Vasudev, it is my duty to leave you both in your new home.

###They keep walking around the stage… happy music continues###

Voice – Kamsa, you are such a fool, you are so affectionate to your sister, but her eighth son will kill you.

###Shocking music###

Kamsa – (Shocked, he looks at his sister… ) I am all powerful and no one can kill me. I will destroy them. Even if it is my dear sister devaki.

Devaki – (crying) No dear brother, please don’t do that I never will wish any harm come to you.

Vasudev – Wait Kamsa. You can’t do that, she is your younger sister. You have to take care of her and not kill her like this. If there are any sons born to us we will give them to you. You can do whatever you want with them

Kamsa – Alright I will keep you both in prison and you don’t try to play tricks with me. (Clap the hands) Guards… Imprison them.

Scene 2

Narration:
In this way Vasudev gave all the babies born to them. Kamsa killed them all. Lord Vishnu appeared in front of Vasudev and devaki.

###music for the appearance for Lord Vishnu###

Vasudev – My Lord, you are the supreme personality of God head and you have appeared to kill all the demons. But now, Kamsa killed all of your brothers. If he sees you now he will harm you.

Vishnu – Do not worry, I am here to take care of everything. Now as I say put me in the basket and carry me across the Yamuna river and leave me with Nanda Mahraja. You bring the baby girl born to Yashoda back with you.

Narration:
Thus Lord Krishna transformed himself into the most beautiful baby dressed in yellow silk and wearing beautiful jewels.
And this day we celeberate as Janmashtami or the appearance of Lord Krishna.

Scene 3

Narration:
(The action is done as narration is going on.)

Vasudeva followed the instructions given by the Lord, took the new born child from the prison, the door keepers fell asleep, he stepped out of the prison and crossed river Yamuna. River Yamuna gave way to Vasudeva and allowed him to cross.

He reached Nanda Mahraj’s house.

Vasudeva – (talking to himself in mind) All the men are sleeping I will place this baby and take the baby girl to the prison house or Kamsa.

(Action - He keeps the Lord and takes the baby girl and reaches the prison)

Scene 4

Narration:
Nanda maharaj performed a gorgeous ceremony for the birth of his new born child. The gopas and gopis went to see the new born child with presents.
Yashoda- Welcome Vasuda, please come and see my baby.

Nanda Mahraj-Welcome my dear friends

Yashoda – My dear Vasudha please come and see my Krishna

Gopi 1- May you become the king of Vraja and protect all of us.

(action – sprinkle a mixture of turmeric powder, oil and water upon the baby and offer prayers)

Churning the milk ocean

Dear parents,

Hare Krishna.

We had around 10 kids last week, we started with the Krishna and Radha pranamas. we continued with the new story of Kurma avatar. I had a book and showed them lots of pictures about the churning the milk ocean. I am sure kids loved it.

The Story is:

Sage Dhuruvasa gifts the garland to Indra, but Indra ignores it so he gets cursed by the Dhuruvasa muni that he will loose all the kingdom and wealth.

Demons headed by Bali mahraj attack Indra and occupy everything. Indra and other demi gods visit Brahmaji for help.

Brahma asks them to approach Vishnu. Lord Vishnu instructs the devatas to churn the milk ocean with Mantara mountain.

With the help of demons the demi gods life the Mantara mountain and start churning using snake Vasuki as rope.

It gets so hard and the mountain sinks, again the demi gods call for Vishnu's help. So Lord Vishnu comes as tortoise (Kurma avatar) and keeps the mantara mountain on his back.

They churn and churn and Vasuki spits poison because of pain. Lord Shiva drink the poison to save the nectar.

After that from the churning comes Godess Lakshmi, Surabi cow, horses and elephants.

Godess Lakshmi goes to Vishnu and Surabi cow is takes by demi gods and others are shared with demons.

Finally the nectar arrives with danvantri. Now both the demons and demigods fight for the nectar. But Lord Vishnu comes as Mohini murti and distributes all of them to the demigods.

Thus they will regain strength and will get all the wealth they had lost.

Hiranyakasipu and Prahlad Mahraj - Part 2

Dear parents,

This the story I told the kids last week in the sunday class. I took this from Srimad Bagavatam 7th canto.

The demon Hiraṇyakaśipu, having thus been blessed by Lord Brahmā and having acquired a lustrous golden body, continued to remember the death of his brother and therefore be envious of Lord Viṣṇu.

Hiraṇyakaśipu became the conqueror of the entire universe. Indeed, that great demon conquered all the planets in the three worlds — upper, middle and lower —

Hiraṇyakaśipu, who possessed all opulence, began residing in heaven, with its famous Nandana garden, which is enjoyed by the demigods. In fact, he resided in the most opulent palace of Indra, the King of heaven.

Hiraṇyakaśipu was always drunk on strong-smelling wines and liquors, and therefore his coppery eyes were always rolling. Nonetheless, because he had powerfully executed great austerities in mystic yoga, although he was abominable, all but the three principal demigods — Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and Lord Viṣṇu — personally worshiped him to please him by bringing him various presentations with their own hands.

Being worshiped by sacrifices offered with great giftsinstead of offering shares , accepted them himself

Everyone, including the rulers of the various planets, was extremely distressed because of the severe punishment inflicted upon them by Hiraṇyakaśipu. Fearful and disturbed, unable to find any other shelter, they at last surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu

Lord Visnu says as follows

When Hiraṇyakaśipu teases the great devotee Prahlāda, his own son, who is peaceful and sober and who has no enemy, I shall kill Hiraṇyakaśipu immediately, despite the benedictions of Brahmā.

Hiraṇyakaśipu had four wonderful, well-qualified sons, of whom the one named Prahlāda was the best. Indeed, Prahlāda was a reservoir of all transcendental qualities because he was an unalloyed devotee of the Personality of Godhead.

He was completely cultured as a qualified brāhmaṇa, having very good character and being determined to understand the Absolute Truth. To respectable persons he acted exactly like a menial servant, to the poor he was like a father, to his equals he was attached like a sympathetic brother, and he considered his teachers, spiritual masters and older Godbrothers to be as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He was completely free from unnatural pride that might have arisen from his good education, riches, beauty, aristocracy and so on

Although Prahlāda Mahārāja was born in a family of asuras, he himself was not an asura but a great devotee of Lord Viṣṇu. Unlike the other asuras, he was never envious of Vaiṣṇavas. He was not agitated when put into danger, and he was neither directly nor indirectly interested in the fruitive activities described in the Vedas. Indeed, he considered everything material to be useless, and therefore he was completely devoid of material desires. He always controlled his senses and life air, and being of steady intelligence and determination, he subdued all lusty desires.

Prahlāda Mahārāja was already educated in devotional life, but when his father sent him to those two sons of Śukrācārya to be educated, they accepted him at their school along with the other sons of the asuras.

Prahlāda certainly heard and recited the topics of politics and economics taught by the teachers, but he understood that political philosophy involves considering someone a friend and someone else an enemy, and thus he did not like it.

When Hiraṇyakaśipu's servants brought the boy Prahlāda back to the guru-kula [the place where the brāhmaṇas taught the boys], the priests of the demons, Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka, pacified him. With very mild voices and affectionate words, they inquired from him as follows.

Dear son Prahlāda, all peace and good fortune unto you. Kindly do not speak lies; just reply with the truth. These boys you see are not like you, for they do not speak in a deviant way. How have you learned these instructions? How has your intelligence been spoiled in this way?

The great soul Prahlāda Mahārāja became silent after saying this to his teachers, Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka, the seminal sons of Śukrācārya. These so-called brāhmaṇas then became angry at him. Because they were servants of Hiraṇyakaśipu, they were very sorry, and to chastise Prahlāda Mahārāja they spoke as follows.

Oh, please bring me a stick! This Prahlāda is damaging our name and fame. Because of his bad intelligence, he has become like a cinder in the dynasty of the demons. Now he needs to be treated by the fourth of the four kinds of political diplomacy.

Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka, the teachers of Prahlāda Mahārāja, chastised and threatened their disciple in various ways and began teaching him about the paths of religion, economic development and sense gratification. This is the way they educated him.

After some time, the teachers Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka thought that Prahlāda Mahārāja was sufficiently educated in the diplomatic affairs of pacifying public leaders, appeasing them by giving them lucrative posts, dividing and ruling over them, and punishing them in cases of disobedience. Then, one day, after Prahlāda's mother had personally washed the boy and dressed him nicely with sufficient ornaments, they presented him before his father.

When Hiraṇyakaśipu saw that his child had fallen at his feet and was offering obeisances, as an affectionate father he immediately began showering blessings upon the child and embraced him with both arms. A father naturally feels happy to embrace his son, and Hiraṇyakaśipu became very happy in this way

śrī-prahrāda uvāca

śravaṇaḿ kīrtanaḿ viṣṇoḥ

smaraṇaḿ pāda-sevanam

arcanaḿ vandanaḿ dāsyaḿ

Prahlāda Mahārāja said: Hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name, form, qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of Lord Viṣṇu, remembering them, serving the lotus feet of the Lord, offering the Lord respectful worship with sixteen types of paraphernalia, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming His servant, considering the Lord one's best friend, and surrendering everything unto Him (in other words, serving Him with the body, mind and words) — these nine processes are accepted as pure devotional service. One who has dedicated his life to the service of Kṛṣṇa through these nine methods should be understood to be the most learned person, for he has acquired complete knowledge.

Bagavad Gita verse 9.26

Verse:
patram pushpam phalam toyam

yo me bhaktya prayacchati

tad aham bhakty-upahritam

asnami prayatatmanah

Translation:If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.

Story of Prahlad Mahraj - Part 1

Dear parents,
Below is the story I told the kids in the class. I got the story from Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 7

Hiranyakasipu's Anger:

Hiranyakasipu was very upset that Krishna killed Hiranyaksha his brother. He considered to kill Lord Vishnu and devastate the Vaikunthaloka kingdom. Exhibiting his terrible teeth, fierce glance and frowning eyebrows, terrible to see, he took up his weapon, a trident, and thus began speaking to his associates, the assembled demons.

He said Krishna is equal to both demons and devatas. But this time when devatas approached him he took their side and helped them. Thus he gave up his natural tendency of equality towards the demons and demigods. He also said Lord Vishnu was influenced by Maya, he assumed the form of a boar to please His devotees. So I will fight with Vishnu to please his brother Hiranyaksha

Thus saying these to the demons he instructed them to destroy everyone. So the demons went ahead and started putting fire to the cities, villages and pasturing grounds, agricultural forest and natural forests. Some of them burned the hermitages, protective gates of the palaces, cut down the trees, destroying the government buildings.

The devatas, were very sad and did not know what to do.

Hiranyakasipu's tapasya:

Hiranyakasipu wanted to do tapasya to attain immortality and not to suffer from old age and disease and not to be attacked by any opponents and wanted to become the ruler of the universe. With this desire he entered the mandara mountain and began praciticing a severe type of austerity and meditation.

Hiranyakasipu began his austerities by standing with his toes on the ground, keeping his arms upward and looking toward the sky. This position was extremely difficult. From the hair on Hiraṇyakaśipu's head there emanated an effulgent light as brilliant and intolerable as the rays of the sun at the time of dissolution. Seeing the performance of such austere penances, the demigods, who had been wandering throughout the planets, now returned to their respective homes.

Because of Hiraṇyakaśipu's severe austerities, fire came from his head, and this fire and its smoke spread throughout the sky, encompassing the upper and lower planets, which all became extremely hot

Because of the power of his severe austerities, all the rivers and oceans were agitated, the surface of the globe, with its mountains and islands, began trembling, and the stars and planets fell. All directions were ablaze.

Devatas approaching Lord Brahma:

Scorched and extremely disturbed because of Hiraṇyakaśipu's severe penances, all the demigods left the planets where they reside and went to the planet of Lord Brahma, where they informed the creator as follows: O lord of the demigods, O master of the universe, because of the fire emanating from Hiraṇyakaśipu's head as a result of his severe austerities, we have become so disturbed that we could not stay in our planets but have come to you

O great person, chief of the universe, if you think it proper, kindly stop these disturbances, meant to destroy everything, before all your obedient subjects are annihilated

Brahma seeing Hiranyakasipu:

Lord Brahma, who is carried by a swan airplane, at first could not see where Hiraṇyakaśipu was, for Hiraṇyakaśipu's body was covered by an anthill and by grass and bamboo sticks. Because Hiraṇyakaśipu had been there for a long time, the ants had devoured his skin, fat, flesh and blood. Then Lord Brahma and the demigods spotted him, resembling a cloud-covered sun, heating all the world by his austerity. Struck with wonder, Lord Brahma began to smile and then addressed him as follows

Lord Brahma said: O son of Kasyapa Muni, please get up, please get up. All good fortune unto you. You are now perfect in the performance of your austerities, and therefore I may give you a benediction. You may now ask from me whatever you desire, and I shall try to fulfill your wish.

My dear son of Diti, with your great determination and austerity you have done what was impossible even for great saintly persons, and thus I have certainly been conquered by you

O best of the asuras, for this reason I am now prepared to give you all benedictions, according to your desire. I belong to the celestial world of demigods, who do not die like human beings. Therefore, although you are subject to death, your audience with me will not go in vain.

After speaking these words to Hiraṇyakaśipu, Lord Brahma, the original being of this universe, who is extremely powerful, sprinkled transcendental, infallible, spiritual water from his kamaṇḍalu upon Hiraṇyakaśipu's body, which had been eaten away by ants and moths. Thus he enlivened Hiraṇyakaśipu

As soon as he was sprinkled with the water from Lord Brahma's waterpot, Hiraṇyakaśipu arose, endowed with a full body with limbs so strong that they could bear the striking of a thunderbolt. With physical strength and a bodily luster resembling molten gold, he emerged from the anthill a completely young man, just as fire springs from fuel wood

Seeing Lord Brahma present before him in the sky, carried by his swan airplane, Hiraṇyakaśipu was extremely pleased. He immediately fell flat with his head on the ground and began to express his obligation to the lord

Hiranyakasipu's asking for benediction:

Hiranyakasipu asked for the benediction for immortality - which means he does not want to leave this world. Brahma said he cannot do that, so Hiranyakasipu asked for benediction - not to be killed by the living entities created by Brahma, not die inside, outside the house , not day time or night time, not in ground or sky, no weapons, not by any demigod of demon, give me mystic power that these cannot be lost any time

Introducing Tulasi arati to kids

Dear parents,
Hare Krishna.

I could not attend the class because of my sore throat. I got the updates from Anuradha mataji.

Here is what she said:

The class did Bhagavad Gita sloka and at this point more kids know the sloka. If required we will go over it again. We started with Tulasi arati, I will post the sloka in next post.

We also discussed the story of Radharani making sweet laddu to Dhuruvasa muni on dhuvadesi. Also Srimati Radharani got blessings from the sage that what ever she cooks will be nectar.

Yashoda mayi will request Kirtida to send Srimati Radha rani home to cook for her son Sri Krishna. One day Yashoda mayi puts turmeric on Radha rani's hands but she washes off in a kund. Sri Krishna takes bath in that kund and he appears as Lord Chaitanya trying to understand the mood of Radha rani.

See you next week

Jarasandha story

Dear parents,
Hare Krishna.

After the nice saturday evening, we started our class on sunday evening with slokas and we revised the entire syllabus what we covered so far.

We also discussed about killing Jarasanda by Bhima under the guidance of Krishna. Below are the points we covered.

Why did Krishna build the Dwaraka city?
What is the birth story of Jarasandha?
How is Krishna related to Jarasandha?
Why did Jarasandha got jealous of Krishna?
What is the strength of Jarasandha?
What is the reason that Yudhistra did the Raja suya sacrifice?
Why did Bhima, Krishna and Arjuna dress themselves as Brahmana and went to Jarasandha's palace?
How many days did they fight?
What was the method they followed to kill Jarasandha?

I will reiterate these questions again next week, so kids remember the story.

I will upload the sloka in my next blog.

Vatsasura story

Once, when Krsna and Balarama were playing on the bank of the Yamuna, a demon of the name Vatsasura assumed the shape of a calf and came there intending to kill the brothers. By taking the shape of a calf, the demon could mingle with other calves. Krsna, however, specifically noticed this, and He immediately told Balarama about the entrance of the demon. Both brothers then followed him and sneaked up upon him. Krsna caught hold of the demon-calf by the two hind legs and tail, whipped him around very forcibly and threw him up into a tree. The demon lost his life and fell down from the top of the tree to the ground. When the demon lay dead on the ground, all the playmates of Krsna congratulated Him, "Well done, well done," and the demigods in the sky began to shower flowers with great satisfaction. In this way, the maintainers of the complete creation, Krsna and Balarama, used to take care of the calves in the morning every day, and thus They enjoyed Their childhood pastimes as cowherd boys in Vrndavana.

Bakasura story

All the cowherd boys would daily go to the bank of the river Yamuna to water their calves. Usually, when the calves drank water from the Yamuna, the boys also drank. One day, after drinking, when they were sitting on the bank of the river, they saw a huge animal which looked something like a duck and was as big as a hill. Its top was as strong as a thunderbolt. When they saw that unusual animal, they became afraid of it. The name of this beast was Bakasura, and he was a friend of Kamsa's. He appeared on the scene suddenly and immediately attacked Krsna with his pointed, sharp beaks and quickly swallowed Him up. When Krsna was thus swallowed, all the boys, headed by Balarama, became almost breathless, as if they had died. But when the Bakasura demon was swallowing up Krsna, he felt a burning fiery sensation in his throat. This was due to the glowing effulgence of Krsna. The demon quickly threw Krsna up and tried to kill Him by pinching Him in his beaks. Bakasura did not know that although Krsna was playing the part of a child of Nanda Maharaja, He was still the original father of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. The child of mother Yasoda, who is the reservoir of pleasure for the demigods and who is the maintainer of saintly persons, caught hold of the beaks of the great gigantic duck and, before His cowherd boy friends, bifurcated his mouth, just as a child very easily splits a blade of grass. From the sky, the denizens of the heavenly planets showered flowers like the cameli, the most fragrant of all flowers, as a token of their congratulations. Accompanying the showers of flowers was a vibration of bugles, drums and conchshells.

When the boys saw the showering of flowers and heard the celestial sounds, they became struck with wonder. When they saw Krsna, they all, including Balarama, were so pleased that it seemed as if they had regained their very source of life. As soon as they saw Krsna coming towards them, they one after another embraced the son of Nanda and held Him to their chests. After this, they assembled all the calves under their charge and began to return home.

When they arrived home, they began to speak of the wonderful activities of the son of Nanda. When the gopis and cowherd men all heard the story from the boys, they felt great happiness because naturally they loved Krsna, and hearing about His glories and victorious activities, they became still more affectionate toward Him. Thinking that the child Krsna was saved from the mouth of death, they began to see His face with great love and affection. They were full of anxieties, but they could not turn their faces from the vision of Krsna. The gopis and the men began to converse amongst themselves about how the child Krsna was attacked in so many ways and so many times by so many demons, and yet the demons were killed and Krsna was uninjured. They continued to converse amongst themselves about how so many great demons in such fierce bodies attacked Krsna to kill Him, but by the grace of Hari, they could not cause even a slight injury. Rather, they died like small flies in a fire. Thus they remembered the words of Garga Muni who foretold, by dint of his vast knowledge of the Vedas and astrology, that this boy would be attacked by many demons. Now they actually saw that this was coming true, word for word.

All the elderly cowherd men, including Nanda Maharaja, used to talk of the wonderful activities of Lord Krsna and Balarama, and they were always so much absorbed in those talks that they forgot the threefold miseries of this material existence. This is the effect of Krsna consciousness. What was enjoyed five thousand years ago by Nanda Maharaja can still be enjoyed by persons who are in Krsna consciousness simply by talking about the transcendental pastimes of Krsna and His associates.

Chapter 1 Text 1 of Bhagavad Gita

Next week we will go through the details of the verses and introduce some characters in Mahabharata.

Verse:

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre
samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva
kim akurvata sañjaya

Translation:

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?

Story of Ekadesi

WHO IS EKADASI ?

In the Satya-yuga there once lived an amazing fearsome demon called Mura.
Always very angry, he terrified all the demigods, defeating even Indra, the king of heaven; Vivasvan, the sun-god; the eight Vasus; Lord Brahma; Vayu, the wind-god; and Agni, the fire-god.
With his terrible power he brought them all under his control.

Then the demigods approached Lord Visnu, and prayed to Him for help.
Hearing the prayers and request from Indra, Lord Visnu became very angry and said:
"O powerful demigods, all together you may now advance on Mura's capital city of Candravati."

Encouraged thus, the assembled demigods proceeded to Candravati with Lord Hari leading the way.
Then there was a big fight between the soldiers of Mura and the demigods.
Many hundreds of demons were killed by the Lord's hand.
At last the chief demon, Mura, began fighting with the Lord, first with weapons, then with bare hands.
The Lord wrested with Mura for one thousand celestial years and then, apparently fatigued, left for Badarika-asrama.
There He entered a very beautiful cave, named Himavati, to rest.

The demon followed Him into the cave, and, seeing Him asleep, started thinking within his heart:
"Today I will kill this slayer of all demons, Hari."

While the wicked demon Mura was making plans in this way, from Lord Visnu's body there manifested a young girl who had a very bright complexion.
Mura saw that she was equipped with various brilliant weapons and was ready to fight.
Challenged by that female to do battle, Mura prepared himself and then fought with her, but he became very astonished when he saw that she fought with him without cessation.
The king of demons then said: "Who has created this angry, fearsome girl who is fighting me so powerfully, just like a thunderbolt falling upon me?"
After saying this, the demon continued to fight with the girl.

Suddenly that effulgent goddess shattered all of Mura's weapons and in a moment deprived him of his chariot.
He ran toward her to attack her with his bare hands, but when she saw him coming she angrily cut off his head.
Thus the demon at once fell to the ground and went to the abode of Yamaraja.

Then the Supreme Lord woke up and saw the dead demon before Him, as well as the maiden bowing down to Him with joined palms.
The Lord, being pleased with the girl, offered to give her a boon.
The maiden said: "O Lord, if You are pleased with me and wish to give me a boon, then give me the power to deliver from the greatest sins that person who fasts on this day.
I wish that half the pious credit obtained by one who fasts will acrue to one who eats only in the evening [abstaining from grains and beans], and that half of *this* pious credit will be earned by one who eats only at midday.
Also, one who strictly observes a complete fast on my appearance day, with controlled senses, goes to the abode of Lord Visnu for one billion kalpas after he has enjoyed all kinds of pleasures in this world.
This is the boon I desire to attain by Your mercy, my Lord.
O Lord, whether a person observes complete fasting, eats only in the evening, or eats only at midday, please grant him a religious attitude, wealth, and at last liberation."

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said:
"O most pious lady, what you have requested is granted.
All My devotees in this world will surely fast on your day, and thus they will become famous throughout the three worlds and finally come and stay with Me in My abode.
Because you, My transcendental potency, have appeared on the eleventh day of the waning moon, let your name be Ekadasi.
If a person fasts on Ekadasi, I will burn up all his sins and bestow upon him My transcendental abode."

Introducing very first verse of Bagavad Gita

Dear parents,

There were lots of items taught to the kids yesterday. We were revising few and got introduced to new ones.

Next week we will concentrate on memorizing them.

We started with narashinga arati, went through Radhae jaya jaya (http://namapriya.blogspot.com/2009/02/radhae-jaya-jaya-madhava-dhayite.html) and the first verse of Bagavad Gita.

We did couple of short stories about ekadesi and the benefits of following ekadesi.
There are different stories about Ekadesi and there are scientific reasons why we should not eat grains during that day.I will post one story of ekadesi in the next blog.

Sesha and Nimai story

Dear parents,

We started with Narashinga prayers and radhae jaya jaya madhava dayite.
Radhae song is pretty tough for kids but this is just to push the kids to next level of bajans. But they are doing pretty good so far.
We also did another small bajan

"Nitai gauranga, Nitai gauranga, Nitai gauranga, gaura hari
Jaya sachi nandana, Jaya sachi nandana,Jaya sachi nandana, gaura hari"

We will practice again this week.

We also talked about how little Nimai was sleeping on sesha nag. Sesha nag wanted to serve little Nimai, because he knows that little Nimai is Lord Krishna himself. All of them in the heavenly planets wanted to server him in some way or the other. But Sesha nag was in more seperation. But when sachi mata and Jaganath misra saw Nimai sleeping on sesha nag, they all cried in distress. All the neighbours were also distressed. So Sesha nag felt so unhappy by making every one sad, he left the place.

See you all next week

Introducing Nimai pandit

Dear parents,

We revised radhae jaya jaya madhava dhaiyete song. The kids are familiar with first four lines. We will continue again this week end to thorough these lines and introduce another 2 lines.

In the story time we talked about Nimai pandit and how he is the yuga avatar for Kali yuga. He is Krishna himself who came to spread the sankirtan movement.

We explained this using a story happened in Nimai childhood pastimes.

A brahmana visits Nimai pandits house and Jaganath misra is Nimai's father wanted to host the brahmana in his house. But the brahmana cooks and offers to Gopal all the time before he eats. He makes the offering but little Nimai comes and eats all the bhoga. He did this three times but the brahmana wanted to go hungry. Then Nimai pandit shows his transcendental form.

We did color Krishna pictures later, which the kids always get excited :)

Forgive and forget story last week

We did a bhajan for sometime. As I said earlier the kids are very comfortable in repeating the bhajan after me. Some of the younger kids were also repeating after me.

Yesterday we revised the story of Syamantaka jewel and Krishna marrying Jambhavi and Satyabhama. Kids were able to recollect the story nicely.

We also discussed how good friends forgive and forget. This concept was explained with the beautiful pastime of Radha and Krishna.

There were lots of kids in the class and everyone was looking forward for coloring. They nicely formed groups to color the pictures of Krishna.

See you all in next week.

Jambhavi and Satyabama marrying Krishna

The last week class was amazing. The students are getting more comfortable with the slokas.

The ask brilliant questions in the stories even if I miss something.

Isn't sunday school so much fun?

The whole story is found in http://www.krsnabook.com/ch56.html

I dont have pictures right now, I will scan and post it. The only one I have is Satrajit offering the syamantaka jewel and Satyabama to Krishna.

I will continue the story again this week. I am going to introduce one more Bhagavad gita sloka this time. I am sure the kids will memorize the same day.

I thank all the parents who bring the kids on time and I appreciate all your efforts in this class.
